TIME Magazine's 2024 Best Invention in Artificial Intelligence — Bellwether
Dr. Sarah Russell, CEO of Bellwether, was my recent guest on our Entrepreneurs for Impact (EFI) podcast.
Bellwether is a climate prediction tool that uses AI to analyze Earth observation data and anticipate changes to the planet. It's used by the public and private sectors to help with disaster preparation and recovery.
Dr. Sarah Russell is a startup founder, tech executive, and physician working at the intersection of business, planetary health, and machine learning.
In addition to Bellwether, she is a Managing Director at X, the Moonshot Factory at Alphabet.
Previously, she held leadership roles at Venrock, the VA Palo Alto Healthcare System, and Google, applying her expertise in healthcare, technology, and regulatory strategy.
Here are some topics we covered:
How to navigate personal growth and identity shifts after selling a business
Why AI models are advantageous over traditional physics-based models in climate and weather event predictions
When to consider expanding a business model to offer comprehensive solutions, including vertical integration and AI-enabled services
How to maintain focus and remember that just because you can doesn’t mean you should
Why you should surround yourself with people way smarter than you and do the ego work to deal with that reality
🎯 How are you applying AI to your climate business? 🎯
Let me know! Share your thoughts on my LinkedIn post about Sarah’s podcast.

EQ — “The limits of my language are the limits of my world."
This quote comes from philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein.
I heard it in Brene Brown’s book, Atlas of the Heart: Mapping Meaningful Connection and the Language of Human Experience.
In surveys with 7,000 people over five years, she saw that most people only identify three emotions to describe their feelings. (Are we still living in caves, grunting at each other?)
Happy
Sad
Angry
However, her research suggests there are 87 different emotions. Below are examples.
Cognitive Dissonance
Overwhelm
Anguish
Worry
Avoidance
Excitement
Foreboding Joy
Fear
Vulnerability
Belonging
Reverence
Envy
Invisibility
Resentment
Schadenfreude
Freudenfreude
🎯 How does this influence how you show up as a leader or manager? 🎯
Emotional intelligence is boosted by emotional fluency.
It’s time to learn some new vocabulary.
If you respond to this email or DM me on LinkedIn, I might compile your “stories from the trenches” in a future post.
That’s all, y’all.
Make it a great week. It’s usually a choice.
